Urgent Update From the Diocese of Brooklyn

Given the continuing and growing concern about the spread of the COVID – 19 virus, Bishop DiMarzio has determined that all public masses be cancelled in the Diocese of Brooklyn beginning Monday, March 16th, until further notice.

Greenpoint Parish Rededicated

Auxiliary Bishop Paul R. Sanchez rededicated the newly renovated lower church of St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus, Greenpoint, March 21 at 5:30 p.m. Mass. Msgrs. Michael Reid and Joseph Calise joined Fathers Kavungal Davy, C.M.I., pastor, and Jilson George, C.M.I., parochial vicar, to celebrate the rededication. Deacon Felix Mejia was the master of ceremonies. Rick Kenny, parish trustee, and many parishioners participated in the Mass.

New Pastor for St. Anthony/St. Alphonsus Parish

Father Kavungal Davy was formally installed as Pastor of St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus Church, on Manhattan Avenue, in a ceremony during Valentine’s Day Mass. Fr. Davy had previously served the parish for seven months under the title of “Administrator.”

The rickety old stable was leaning heavily, held up only by a makeshift pipe between it and the church building. It had served the parish of St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus, Greenpoint, very well through the years, and was a focal point of the Christmas season on the busy Manhattan Ave. shopping area.

By Ornate Indian parasols decorated the exterior of St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus Church in Greenpoint, where hundreds of Indian Catholics rejoiced over their newest saint. Devotees from Brooklyn and Queens as well as New Jersey, Connecticut and Philadelphia attended a Sunday afternoon Mass of thanksgiving on Dec. 7 to celebrate the canonization of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara.

Bishop Will Give Thanks for St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara

A Mass of thanksgiving in honor of the canonization of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara will be celebrated at St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus Church, Greenpoint, on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will be the main celebrant. St. Kuriakose Elias is the founder of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (C.M.I.), who staff the Brooklyn parish. Six members of the community minister in the Diocese of Brooklyn.
